Unfortunately for her, as was customary in the France of those days, there is a strike – this one involving the union of subway workers. This odyssey of a big city experienced by a young girl is what makes Louis Malle’s film ZAZIE DANS LE METRO so charming to me. The humor, well, the humor is a different matter altogether. For his 1. 6th novel, Raymond Queneau didn’t really set out to write anything particularly humorous, but Zazie dans le metro somehow captivated the French reading public and became a classic of comic writing upon its publication in 1. It was apparently the most popular book ever written by the middle- aged author, who comes across in two TV interviews (1. In fact, reading his brief biography online, I wasn’t surprised to see that he loved science and mathematics as much as literature and, in fact, tried to apply mathematical principles to some of his fiction. When asked by a TV interviewer to define “comic,” Queneau wisely says, “I don’t think anyone’s ever been able to define it.” He admits in 1. Queneau admits that he doesn’t find Zazie dans le metro a funny book but is glad that readers find it amusing, even though that was not his intention. The funniest moment in this interview happens when the unseen interviewer asks Queneau to discuss humor after World War II. Queneau refers to black humor as “caricature based on the horrors around us” but declines to think of Zazie dans le metro as an example of black humor – until he laughingly remembers that his novel won “The Black Humor Award” in France. He slyly suggests that if it won that award, it must indeed be an example of black humor. However, in writing Zazie, Queneau was mainly interested in French “occasionally- working” class dialect. He created many words – transpositions of syllables and run- on phrases scrambled up, impossible to literally translate into English and only awkwardly represented in the subtitles of Louis Malle’s film version. Queneau had actually started thinking of the novel in the immediate postwar era. The title Zazie dans le metro came to him all at once and he immediately wrote four pages about a 1. Paris underground on the subway. But then around that time (1. L’Enfant du metro was published and Queneau saw no reason to continue with his Zazie story, especially since he found the children’s book quite lovely. Five or six years later he returned to his notes and began writing Zazie dans le metro, but now he decided his protagonist would be 1. Zazie Dans Le Metro MagnetFor the film version, Louis Malle chose 9 . In order not to revisit the subterranean odyssey of L’Enfant du metro, Queneau placed his Zazie completely above ground because of the subway workers’ strike. So, despite the title, le metro “became of secondary importance.” Instead, what most interested Queneau as far as the plotline of his new novel was the process of initiation. He, like many others, felt that young people in Europe no longer had initiation rites, “the trials young people must pass through before they can become adults.” Zazie would begin her initiation with the help of the city of Paris. Perhaps with all this serious talk about a book that the general public found quite hilarious, it should be no surprise that a serious director like Louis Malle would decide to make a film out of Zazie. Judging from a 1. TV interview filmed on the day before the film opened in Paris, one can see what a serious young man Malle is at the time. He had already become notorious for his erotic boundary- breaker LES AMANTS (1. ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS. ZAZIE would be yet again an exploration of another cinematic style. He suggests that he enjoyed making a film from an “unfilmable book” which relied so heavily on wordplay. Malle said in 1. 96. Queneau’s novel a “very probing critique of language, writing, and literature” and wanted his film version to be “a critique of the language of cinema.” Consequently he used a lot of special cinematic effects available at the time: variations in camera speed, time- lapse, and the “systematic use of unrealistic color” . For the humor created through using such techniques, he had plenty of models to draw on: the late 1. Georges Melies . A less desirable influence on some scenes of ZAZIE comes from the Three Stooges, who still make me very nervous with all their eye- poking and head- smacking. They are an acquired taste which I somehow never acquired. A more surprising (and very direct) source of visual inspiration for Malle’s film comes from the cartoons of Tex Avery (creator of “Daffy Duck” and others at MGM, 1. Philippe Collin, first assistant director on ZAZIE, had written a study of Tex Avery’s work, and Malle asked him to write a list of gags found in the Tom & Jerry cartoons (not a production of Avery’s mind, but appropriate for the physical, visual, absurdist humor that Malle wanted to put into ZAZIE). Malle was determined to be faithful to the satire he found in Queneau’s novel and felt that the comedy found in early silent shorts and in certain cartoons “tended to denounce the absurdities of our modern world.” The director even went so far as to take his completed film (unsubtitled) to show to Chaplin in his home in Switzerland. Even though Chaplin didn’t speak French, Malle felt that the master of visual/situational humor “was literally shaken up by what the film portrayed – its terrible vision of modern life: the chaotic, absurd life in Paris that tosses the characters about.” So, if Malle was happy with that reaction even from the grand master of screen comedy, then he must have achieved what he wanted. By this point, the interviewer in the 1. TV program seems to become concerned by Malle’s serious tone. He implores, “After all, isn’t ZAZIE a comedy?” Malle answers without laughing: “. It begins calmly, and as it progresses, the craziness grows, and it turns increasingly nightmarish, like a dream raised to the second power.” But he briefly gives in and admits to hoping people will laugh, but that “beyond the laughter, as they leave the theater, they feel shaken up and even a bit afraid.” Brrrrrrr. In the film, she’s always right. The others are always wrong. She’s the only one who’s unflinching, pure, whole. Her violence is never gratuitous and denounces the absurdity of our world.” Wow, just imagine such a filmmaker going on late- night American TV to promote his new film, which everyone is expecting to be a comedy. And others like the Coen Brothers and even David Lynch (in the darkest way). As for the actual production of ZAZIE DANS LE METRO, Philippe Collin, who served as first assistant director, provided some interesting facts in a 2. Criterion DVD of ZAZIE. But so much was shot on location, leading Collin to rightly refer to ZAZIE as “one of the great films on Paris.” The New Wave films of Godard and Truffaut, among others, were becoming famous for shooting on location, but Malle preceded that use of real locations with his ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS (1. Collin refers to ZAZIE’s “very sophisticated use of color.” He also credits American photographer William Klein’s contributions as artistic advisor on this film. His books on New York City caught Malle’s eye, especially for his images from advertising – striking fonts, bold graphics, bright neon signs. The French director invited Klein to work with him on the new film. Perspective lines were also skewed with this lens. Collin recognizes how Malle’s adoption of such a lens provided a “good visual transposition of Queneau’s literary style, which is anything but realistic.” Even for settings known to people in Paris, the images would be distorted. Another interesting contribution to the look of the film was Klein’s creation of movable boards plastered with large letters, as if from advertising, which could be moved around and turned into nonsensical words in the background. They show up in various permutations throughout the film, adding to the “Pop Art” look, while also covering up architecture or other things Malle didn’t want in the frame. These non- communicative billboards were another way of echoing the wordplays in Queneau’s novel. Another clever element in Malle’s film is the use of the same extras (8- 1. All of Zazie’s disrespect for adults is funny and well deserved. The satire of the pomposity and absurdity of grown- ups works quite well.
